Measles Cases Rise To 64 In US: Total Number Of Cases Cross 2023 Levels, Reports CDC

Measles is an infectious diseases which in recent times has become more dangerous than ever not only in the United States of America but also in the world. In the year 2023, the country had recorded 58 cases in total. In 2024, 64 cases have been recorded as of Thursday, as per the data reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In spite of effective vaccines present in the world, the cases are increasing and there have also been deaths in some countries of the world. Health officials of US commented that, it is in fact distressing to note that this disease is a threat to public health despite the existence of preventive measures like vaccines.

What Is The Reasons Behind Such High Number Of Cases In The US?

Health officials cited the possible reasons behind the rise in measles cases in the US:

  1. Firstly, there has been a decline in the state-required vaccinations among kindergarten children in the US. It fell from 95 percent in 2019-2020 to about 93 percent in2022-2023. This is a very serious decline due to which many kids may remain unvaccinated and exposed to the virus.
  2. Multiple cases in the US are linked to travelers who travel internationally especially in countries like Britain, Austria and the Philippines. As per CDC, these travel destinations have also had outbreaks.
  3. There is a section of society in the US who do not want to be vaccinated under these following reasons: 'personal choice,' 'individual freedom,' 'bodily autonomy'. These people also might remain unvaccinated and exposed.
  4. CDC report states that most of the patients who were infected have been unvaccinated children of age 12 months or older.
