Health institutions operated by the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) will soon be allowed to handle medico-legal cases and issue health status certificates.

Presently, the BMC-run Bhagwati hospital in Borivli is the nearest hospital that accepts medico-legal cases i.e. accident and crime related cases.

The deputy director of health services, Thane, in an official letter to the health department confirmed that medical institutions run by the civic body will soon be allowed to accept such cases.

This was in response to the issue highlighting the problem of acknowledging medico-legal cases raised by veteran BJP corporator, Rohidas Patil.

'Each time there is an accident or a crime related medical case, the victims escorted by a police personnel have no other option but to travel all the way to Borivli, which not only kills time but is a sheer wastage of money as well,' said Patil.

'By taking cognizance of the issue, the district health department has not only ensured a much needed respite to the people of this area, but have also minimised the strain on the local police and Bhagwati Hospital,' added Patil.

Covering an area of 79.4 sq km, the twin-city having a population of more than 10 lakh, has a total of five police stations Uttan, Bhayander, Mira Road, Navghar and Kashimira under its jurisdiction.
'It is a good initiative and we are planning to arrange training for our doctors, so that they can learn how to handle such cases,'' said deputy municipal commissioner, Dr Sambhajji Panpatte.

Welcoming the much needed move, a senior police official said, 'There are several time- sensitive cases in which physical and pathological tests need to be done on time and in case of delays, there occur a lot of problems in catching the culprits.'
