Renowned Indian Classical Dancer Mrinalini Sarabhai passed away on Thursday at the age of 97. She was hospitalised at an Ahmedabad-based hospital on Wednesday after age she suffered from some age related complications. Her daughter Mallika Sarabhai who is also a renowned classical dancer confirmed the news on her Facebook page. She wrote, 'My mother Mrinalini Sarabhai has just left for her eternal dance.' Sarabhai was fondly known as 'Amma' and also founded the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts in Ahmedabad which offers training in various art forms. According to reports, she was educated under the guidance of Rabindranath Tagore at Shantiniketan after which she studied at the American Academy of dramatic arts. After returning to India, she began her training in Bharatnatyam, Kathakali and Mohiniyattom and was one of the firs classical dancers to turn to choreography. Besides being a dancer, she was also a poet, writer and an environmentalist.
Mrinalini Sarabhai was awarded Padma Shri in 1965 and the Padma Bhushan in 1992. She was married to the architect of Indian Space Programme, Vikram Sarabhai, and is survived by two children Kartikeya Sarabhai and Mallika Sarabhai.
