Researchers have found out that certain ingredients present in the famous mouthwash brand Listerine are directly linked to increased bacterial growth in your mouth that can cause cancer.
In the study, published in the Journal of Medical Microbiology, experts have cautioned that regular use of Listerine Cool Mint Mouthwash is associated with an increased abundance of common oral opportunistic bacteria that can cause oesophageal, and colorectal cancer. The researchers stated that daily use of alcohol led to a significant increase in species inside the mouth - Fusobacterium Nucleatum, and Streptococcus Anginosus. These two bacteria are linked to a higher risk of gum disease, as well as oesophagal and colorectal cancers.
The study also noted a decrease in Actinobacteria, a group of bacteria essential for regulating blood pressure, among those who regularly use Listerine mouthwash.
Explaining the link between Listerine mouthwash and cancer to TheHealthSite.com, Dr Pradeep Banerjee said, "Listerine, a household name for eliminating germs and freshening breath, packs a heavy load of alcohol, particularly ethanol. It is this hefty alcohol density, that is suspected to up the onset of cancer risks tied up with routine usage. When used frequently and in large amounts, the alcohol in Listerine could harm the soft tissues in the oesophagus and gut".
