After a four-month wait, the company's first wellness and fitness tracking devices are set to go on sale and, from May 18, health conscious consumers and those dedicated to quantifying themselves will be able to snap up the LG Lifeband Touch or the Heart Rate Earphones, both of which were first demonstrated at this year's International CES in January.
More than just a wristband, the Lifeband Touch has a full-touch OLED display meaning that wearers can tap and swipe to access real-time data relating to their fitness and can also check notifications from their smartphones -- i.e. incoming calls and messages -- and remotely control the phone's music player, skipping or pausing tracks.
As well as offering more functionality than most competing smart wristbands currently on the market, LG's first offering in this sector is compatible with a number of existing fitness apps such as MyFitnessPal, Runkeeper and MapMyFitness and will work just as well with an iPhone as it will with an Android device, something the Samsung Gear Fit, its closest direct competitor, doesn't do.
Something else that Samsung doesn't offer is a set of in-the-ear headphones that can also monitor and track the listener's heart rate. They might sound like a gimmick but they're an excellent idea.
More comfortable to wear than a strap-on heart rate monitor and more accurate than sensors fitted to wristbands, especially when physical activity is at its peak, the headphones can work on their own or in concert with the Lifeband Touch.
The headphones relay information via Bluetooth and, like the Lifeband, are designed to play nicely with phones made by companies other than LG.
Both devices are set to launch in the US on May 18 and in the weeks that follow will also roll out in Asia and Europe. LG will confirm pricing on May 18.
