The Health Department is now concerned about the increasing incidence of leprosy cases in the state. According to a survey in 2011-12 where 19 districts and 24 urban areas in Maharashtra were covered, 2440 leprosy cases were found. The total population surveyed was 2.4 crores.
According to WHO, the upper limit for declaring an area with leprosy 'under control', the incidence has to be less than one in 10,000. The current survey has brought to light that the ratio is much more than this number.
The Health minister Suresh Shetty assured that measures were being taken to sensitize the doctors and create awareness campaigns. The State has also increased allowances and grants to hospitals and NGOs involved.
