After two Spanish Ebola victims, another case of the deadly disease has been reported in Spain. This time the victim is a Spanish nurse who was treating the earlier two two Ebola victims at a Madrid hospital. She is the first person to contract the virus outside of Africa, confirmed health officials.
Earlier, Miguel Pajares, 75-year old Spanish priest, contracted the virus from Liberia and was brought to Madrid's La Paz-Carlos III hospital on August 12. Next, Manuel Garcia Viejo, 69-year old Spanish missionary, was shifted from Sierra Leone and died at the same hospital on September 25. Both were members of the Hospital Order of San Juan de Dios, a Roman Catholic group that runs a charity working with Ebola victims in Africa.
The Spanish nurse is a health professional who took care of Ebola patients repatriated to Carlos III' hospital, said Mercedes Vinuesa, the director of Spain's public health department. She was admitted to hospital on Monday morning with high fever, Spanish newspaper El Pais reported. The emergency treatment room was immediately isolated, the report said.
What is the Ebola virus disease survival rate?
This disease that is highly infectious kills more than 90% of the individuals being infected with the virus (which means that the mortality rate of the Ebola disease is 90%). Hence only 10% of the individuals being infected with the virus survive i.e., the survival rate of the Ebola infection is only 10%.
The low survival rate of the Ebola is because the virus has an incubation period of 2 21 days (after which the symptoms start to appear). Also the early symptoms such as fever, headache, stomach pain and drop in blood pressure are not specific, which most people tend to ignore. And till the late symptoms appear, the condition worsens leading to death (which usually occurs due to low blood pressure). The fact that Ebola virus has no cure makes the disease more detrimental.
