Chimerix, a biopharmaceutical company based in Durham, was granted FDA approval to test the antiviral drug called Brincidofovir in patients with Ebola last month. Following approval of request for an emergency Investigational New Drug, the company began sending out the drug to the administering physician and health centers with isolation facilities for Ebola patients. The drug was previously provided to Thomas Eric Duncan, the first Ebola patient in US, who died.

According to their website, the drug is a powerful antiviral agent that is effective against various family of viruses including smallpox and cytomegalovirus. Although the drug showed positive laboratory results in killing the virus, there are no animal or human studies to guarantee its efficacy.

The company is currently running trials of the drug, which will proceed till January 2016.
