Latest Ebola News: Germany treats the third Ebola patient

A third UN employee infected with the deadly Ebola virus in West Africa, a Sudanese doctor, arrived for treatment in Germany today from Liberia, local health officials said. ‘He is being treated at a clinic in Leipzig,’ one of seven health centres in Germany specialised in highly infectious diseases, Ralph Schreiber, a health ministry spokesman in the eastern state of Saxony, told. The world’s largest outbreak of Ebola has killed 3,865 people out of 8,033 infected so far this year, mainly in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, according to the latest count of the UN’s World Health Organization. The United States has stepped up airport screenings as the spillover of the virus – with the first diagnosis in the US and the first case of infection in Spain – has raised fears of contagion in the West. Germany has previously treated two WHO employees infected with Ebola in Sierra Leone – a Senegalese expert who was treated in Hamburg and released on October 4, and a Ugandan doctor now being treated in Frankfurt. (Read: 10 reasons that make the Ebola virus deadly for humans)

Here are some expert tips that can help you prevent the disease.

Educate yourself about Ebola: Knowing the symptoms, modes of transmission and preventive measures is the first step to prevent the spread of the disease. This information is especially important for those who are travelling to and from affected areas in West Africa. (Read: Has the Ebola virus really come to India?)

Maintain sanitary conditions: Basic hygiene plays a very important role in preventing Ebola. The exact way by which the virus enters the body is still debatable but skin and eyes are suggested routes for viral entry. However, food and water may also serve as source of entry. So, simple acts like washing hands before eating and disinfecting surfaces and covering the mouth can help prevent the spread of the virus, especially in areas surrounding the areas of outbreak.
