Kuttu Atta Poisoning: In a shocking incident, at least 200 people have been reported to have fallen sick after consuming Kuttu Atta (Buckwheat Flour) during Navratri fasting in several locations, on Monday, in New Delhi.
The food poisoning event came to light on September 23, at 6.10 am, when Jahangirpuri police station received information that a large number of people started complaining of stomach discomfort and nausea after consuming Kuttu Atta.
Following an enquiry at Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital (BJRM), Dr. Vishesh Yadav, CMO, told the media that around 150-200 individuals from areas including Jahangirpuri, Mahendra Park, Samaypur, Bhalswa Dairy, Lal Bagh, and Swaroop Nagar had visited the emergency ward with symptoms of food poisoning.
Delhi police also informed the media that local shopkeepers, vendors, and residents are being sensitised through beat staff and public address systems. The matter has also been communicated to the Food Department for further necessary action.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) explains, "Infections with microbes, viruses, bacteria, and parasites cause most food poisoning.2 Harmful chemicals also cause some cases of food poisoning. Microbes can spread to food at any time while the food is grown, harvested or slaughtered, processed, stored, shipped, or prepared."
Foods which are contaminated with germs can make people sick resulting in symptoms such as stomach pains, diarrhoea or vomiting. In some serious conditions, food poisoning can even lead an individual to kidney failure, blood infections and paralysis. But the good news is that it can be easily prevented with some simple and effective steps.
Here are some essential points outlined by the US health agency to keep yourself safe from food poisoning, especially during the festive season:
The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) claims that, although most flours do not like raw food, most flour is raw. This means that it hasn't been treated to kill germs that can cause food poisoning, such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Salmonella.
"These harmful germs can contaminate grain while it's still in the field or flour while it's being made. Steps like grinding grain and bleaching flour don't kill harmful germs and these germs can end up in flour or baking mixes you buy at the store," the CDC states. "You can get sick if you eat unbaked dough or batter made with flour containing germs. Germs are killed only when flour is baked or cooked."
