Khaleda Zia, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson and former prime minister, was treated in intensive care on Saturday. The former Bangladesh PM's health condition is "extremely critical," leading her family and party members to ask citizens to pray for her quick recovery. Zia, 80, was rushed to the hospital on November 23 with indications of a lung infection and was in "very critical" condition, a member of her political party said late Friday. Several prominent BNP leaders and concerned supporters went to the hospital to get an update on her condition.
Khaleda Zia Shifted to Intensive Care, Health Condition 'Extremely Critical'
"Khaleda Zia is in intensive care, and consultations with physicians are ongoing," Ahmed Azam Khan of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) told the media outside the hospital in Dhaka on Saturday. An air ambulance had been put on standby to transport Zia abroad for advanced treatment if her condition improved, Khan said.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, "Last night, the doctors said that her physical condition is extremely critical."
Multiple Health Complications Reported
According to media reports, Zia has "heart problems, liver and kidney issues, diabetes, lung problems, arthritis, and eye-related illnesses". It is speculated that she has a permanent pacemaker and has previously undergone heart stenting.
Khaleda Zia's Eldest Son Tarique Rahman Urges Prayers
Tarique Rahman, Zia's eldest son, who has lived in London since 2008, has urged the people of Bangladesh to pray for his mother's recovery. "We express our heartfelt thanks and gratitude for all of your prayers and love for the highly respected Begum Khaleda Zia," Rahman, 60, wrote on social media Saturday. "We fervently request you to continue your prayers for her early recovery."
Rahman claimed he was unable to return to Bangladesh due to circumstances beyond his control. "I share the same deep longing as any child to have my mother's touch in moments of crisis. However, the decision to return home is neither straightforward nor mine alone to make," he said.

Zia, who spent three times as prime minister, was imprisoned for corruption in 2018 by Sheikh Hasina's government, and she was also prevented from flying overseas for medical treatment. She was released last year, just after Hasina's removal.
