The Kerala government has set up a committee to conduct a comprehensive study on the ill-effects of liquor consumption, it was announced Thursday. Minister for Excise K. Babu said the committee would be headed by K. Vijayakumar, who heads the community medicine department at the Medical College. (Read: Beware the ill effects of alcohol go much deeper than you think!)
'The study will look into all aspects of the ill-effects of liquor consumption,' said Babu. The committee comes up at a time when the Kerala government is debating the issue of giving licenses to 418 bars that have been closed down since the beginning of this fiscal years. In Kerala, liquor is sold in 752 bars, hotels and 383 state-owned retail outlets.
What does alcohol do to your liver?
When you drink alcohol made primarily of ethanol your liver works overtime to convert the ethanol into acetic acid. This is then converted into a less toxic form called acetate, which is eventually removed from the body as urine.
Sounds simple enough, doesn't it? Well, all this converting and watering down of large amounts of toxins, divertes the liver from its primary functions like providing glucose. Glucose is extremely important for your brain to function. The lack glucose or hypoglycaemia is one of the main reasons you suffer from a hangover, feel lethargic, have lowered cognitive functions and suffer from nausea, vomiting, headaches and fatigue.
