Kerala Confirms Second Mpox Infection From Ernakulam: 4 Things You Must Not Do As Per Government Advisory

Mpox update in India: Kerala has officially confirmed the second case of mpox on Friday. As per reports, a man hailing from Ernakulam city recently tested positive of mpox virus. The Health department of Kerala says that his condition is stable and is currently receiving tre4atment in the hospital. The strain of the mpox case has not been determined yet however, earlier this month the first mpox case reported from Kerala belonged to the Clade 1B variant of mpox.

On Thursday, the Union Health Ministry issued mpox guidelines for all States and Union Territories to follow. A set of dos and don'ts for the public, health officials, government authorities to follow procedure and ensure effective management of the disease. These guidelines were issues in an attempt to curb further spread, raise awareness regarding the disease, its symptoms and when to seek medical assistance.

Along with stressing on the things that need to be done as a priority, the health secretary also issued some pointers stating the things that should not be done. Take a look:

  1. Avoid Panic: Mpox is preventable if the public and health authorities simply coordinated effectively. While the authorities work on tackling the disease, it is important not to panic or create mass panic. It is important to ensure proper public communication and clarity of procedures.
  2. Avoid Delays In Reporting The Symptoms: Suspected cases must be reporte4d as soon as patients face similar symptoms. A delay can make the outbreak even worse.
  3. Avoid Crowding In Health Facilities: Authorities should follow procedure and only admit cases with symptoms and cases that need isolation. Facilities should not be overcrowded.
  4. Do Not Ignore Mild Cases Or Symptoms: Infection is likely to spread form both severe and mild cases so, it is important that health officials do not ignore mild cases. This can prevent risks of unnoticed transmission.

Mpox Disease Global Update

The Democratic Republic of Congo has reported nearly 30,000 suspected mpox cases, as per World Health Organisation (WHO) Report. DRC has been a hotbed of mpox infection from the first outbreak. Most of the cases in Africa were reported from this country including death cases. At present, WHO reports that tests have run out in the region. The United Nations bodies had recently supplied DRC with vaccines for mpox however, the cases seem to only increase. In the fight against mpox disease and its spr4ead in the continent the Africa's Centres for Disease Control and Prevention recently pledged over USD 800 million in the region's fight against mpox disease.

In India so far, two confirmed cases have been reported of Clade 1B and Clade II variant and a recent third case whose variant is yet to be confirmed.
