After a year of deliberation to introduce progressive law that aims to ease women's burden in Karnataka, the state government now offers a promising new benefit for women in all sectors.
On Thursday, the Karnataka Government approved the Period Leave Policy 2025, which would allow female employees in all sectors of industry, such as government offices, private companies, and industrial sectors, a one-day leave per month that totals up to 12 days in a year.
Santhosh Lad, Karnataka Labour Minister, took to X to express about the 'historic step' the government has taken to support women. In his words, "The Menstrual Leave Policy 2025 has been approved in today's Cabinet meeting. With the implementation of this policy, women working in both government and private sectors will now be eligible for one paid leave day each month during their menstrual cycle.
"On behalf of all the women of our state, heartfelt thanks to our state government for taking such a historic step. This decision reflects our government's commitment to supporting women not just in terms of progress, but also with empathy and care for their well-being. The policy will be implemented in the coming days."

Although the policy is yet to be implemented, following the launch of the Period Leave Policy 2025, Karnataka now joins states like Bihar and Odisha, which offer two and one day paid menstrual leave, respectively, per month for their female employees.
