As the world continues to mourn the loss of Matthew Perry, who played the role of Chandler Bing in the hit TV series FRIENDS, his co-star Jennifer Aniston discusses Perry's year-long struggle with addiction in a recent interview.
While speaking to a leading media outlet, Aniston revealed that the FRIENDS cast had been mourning Perry's year-long battle even before his demise and tried everything they could to help him, something the late actor himself acknowledged in his memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing."
Aniston said, "We did everything we could when we could. But it almost felt like we'd been mourning Matthew for a long time because his battle with that disease was a really hard one for him to fight."
Recalling those times as some of the hardest, not only for Perry but also for his co-stars and fans. She added, "As hard as it was for all of us and for the fans, there's a part of me that thinks this is better. I'm glad he's out of that pain."
Perry passed away on October 28, 2023, at the age of 54, and according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner'sOffice, his cause of death is due to 'the acute effects' of ketamine, with drowning a contributing factor.
Perry was found in the hot tub at his Pacific Palisades home, and the contributing to his death as listed in the autopsy report were drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine, a drug used to treat opioid use disorder.
Reportedly, the doctor who supplied Perry with ketamine was charged with 40 years behind bars and could also end up paying more than 1 million USD in fines under the plea deal.
In June, the doctor took a plea deal admitting to the distribution of ketamine to the FRIENDS star without a legitimate medical purpose, because of which Perry died of an overdose in October 2023.
