Cases pertaining to jaundice are on the rise in Ernakulum, Kerala. As per reports, at least 722 suspected jaundice case have been reported this year among which 563 have been confirmed. Eight people have also succumbed from jaundice this year raising an alarm regarding the spread of this disease. Health officials have urged people to take up caution and extra vigilance especially while consuming cold drinks, water and foods from outside.
Reports say that the main cause behind the rise in jaundice cases are drinking untreated water, contamination of drinking water, consuming foods and cold drinks that are from outside, consumption and use of ice made with industrially impure water and lack of hygiene.
Majority of the jaundice cases have been reported from Malayattoor, Payipra, Sreemoolanagaram, Kizhakkambalam, Kothamangalam, Nedumbassery, Nellikkuzhi, Kalamassery, Vengoor, Mattancherry, and Avoly. Sources say that contaminated water was found in all of the above regions which could be one of the causes of jaundice spread.
