The unexpected death of humorist Jaswinder Bhalla from a brain stroke has again put one of the world's most dangerous medical emergencies into the limelight. While heart attacks tend to be the topic of conversation for critical diseases, brain stroke is no less and perhaps even more perilous.

How Dangerous is a Brain Stroke?

A brain stroke is caused by a block in blood flow to a brain region, either by a clot (ischemic stroke) or the breakage of a blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke), states Dr. Gupta. Brain cells start dying immediately due to insufficient oxygen.

  1. High risk of mortality: Stroke is the world's second leading cause of death.
  2. Long-term disability: Survivors usually endure paralysis, loss of speech, memory impairment, or blindness.

Significance of golden hour: On-time medical treatment in the initial 3 4.5 hours can prove to be lifesaving and minimize permanent injury."Each minute is precious when a stroke occurs. Delayed treatment could mean the difference between making a complete recovery and lifelong disability," insists Dr. Gupta.

Symptoms of Brain Stroke

Key Symptoms to watch out for - Dr. Gupta suggests keeping in mind the FAST rule, which assists in recognizing the early warning signals of stroke:

  • F - Face Drooping: Sudden weakness or numbness of one side of the face.
  • A - Arm Weakness: Difficulty in lifting one or both arms.
  • S - Speech Difficulty: Incoherent or slurred speech.
  • T - Time to Act: Run to the closest stroke-capable hospital immediately.

Other signs are:

  1. Sudden and very severe headache without any known cause
  2. Blurred or double vision
  3. Dizziness or loss of balance or coordination
  4. Confusion or trouble understanding speech suddenly

Preventive Lifestyle And Medical Measures

While a stroke may be sudden in onset, Dr. Gupta stresses that as much as 80% of strokes are avoidable with proper precautions at the right time:

Lifestyle Changes

  1. Control Blood Pressure - This is the biggest contributing risk factor.
  2. Manage Diabetes
  3. Keep a tab on your blood cholesterol levels (try to add more nutritious and whole foods to your diet).
  4. Quit Smoking and say no to alcohol.
  5. Exercise Regularly (as per studies, a regular walk outside in nature can help stay healthy and fit).
  6. Healthy Diet (eat fresh fruits and vegetables, Control salt and sugar intake).

What else to keep in mind? As per experts, a brain stroke is a life-threatening medical emergency where every second counts - every second matters! In order to control the condition and to keep the patient safe, it is important to understand the importance of prompt recognition of signs and immediate hospital treatment.

Dr. Gupta urges everyone to understand this silent death risk and track the symptoms to stay safe: "Stroke doesn't just affect the patient; it affects families. Early recognition of signs and fast action are the best ways to combat it."
