Leading a unique initiative in adolescent healthcare- Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre launched the first Adolescent Clinic in Mumbai. The clinic is aptly named Lighthouse and was launched on 11 November, 2017 at Hotel Taj. Adolescence is a time of transition that can be filled with questions and challenges, hence this clinic intends at providing expert help to teenagers & adolescents. The Clinic will be addressing concerns over physical, mental and emotional health of the young ones. Identification & prevention of chronic illness, spreading awareness about body & mind changes, how to handle these changes and how to communicate in case health issues; will be other key areas of the clinic.
The world is home to 1.2 billion adolescents, and India has the largest population of adolescents in the world - 253 million. Owing to this demographic- it is of utmost importance to start taking Adolescent Health more seriously. With this dedicated thought Jaslok Hospital & Research Center organized a panel discussion at the launch which consisted of eminent personalities & speakers. Famous Bollywood actress Raveena Tandon, the Principal of The Cathedral & John Cannon School Meera Isaac , renowned gynecologist Dr Duru Shah, Dr. Sudeshna Ray, Gynaecologist Dr. Shamsah Sonawalla, Psychiatrist, Ms. Indu Shahani, President & Chair- ISDI | ISME | ISDI WPP & Ex Principal- HR College of Commerce & Economics, Ms. Radhika Sinha, Principal- Aditya Birla World Academy, Mr. Anirudha Dutta, Author & Analyst, Ms. Priyanka Agarwal, Nutritionist , Ms. Anshini Mehta, Student of ISME, Ms. Shreelakshmi Agarwal, Student of ISME, along with the CEO of Jaslok Hospital Dr Tarang Gianchandani shed light on why adolescent healthcare is the need of the hour. Special Focus Areas of Lighthouse
According to the statistics of WHO it is estimated that 2.6 million adolescents between the age of 10 -24 years die each year and a much greater number of young people suffer from illnesses behaviors which hinder their growth & development. Therefore, Jaslok Hospital center encourages preteens, teenagers, young adults and parents of young girls/boys to come at the clinic and get their healthcare questions answered.
Dr Tarang Gianchandani, CEO, Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre said, Jaslok Hospital has always worked towards the betterment of the people. This big initiative was a plan to provide treatment, solutions and spread awareness of specialized treatment options available for the teenagers. As the hub Mumbai was lacking a specialized adolescent clinic under one roof we thought of commencing it to our city. This initiative is to establish that hospitals treat but institutions like Jaslok would want all our masses to stay healthy and hence focus on preventive care as well as appropriate care in time. Leading the team at the adolescent Clinic, Dr Duru Shah, said I am obliged to be a part of the launch. Steps for the big impact had begun to make a difference in the health industry with our initiative. I am thankful to the hospital for raising the issues and finding a full-fledged solution for the same. Youth is a critical phase of life which accompany with many physical, psychological, physiological and behavioral patterns. The health issues occur along with the critical phase so it is important to succor the teenagers minimize their problems.
