In a recent development concerning the mysterious death of 17 members of three families in Badhal, a village in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district, an initial investigation has revealed pesticide contamination in a nearby baoli or a water reservoir. The water reservoir is suspected to have pesticide residue from which the victims had consumed water. According to media reports, they suspect this to be the cause of death of 17 victims. However, it must be noted that the investigation is still underway and that a direct link has not yet been established between the contaminated water and the deaths. The cause behind the contamination has also not been confirmed yet.

According to news reports, a central team, is currently operating in the region of Jammu and Kashmir and is also assisting the local administration. The team has ruled out the possibility of a "mystery disease outbreak." They have stated that the reason behind the deaths is neither a virus or bacterium.

All the victims, including 14 children, were from three families in Badhal village, located in Rajouri district.

Sources also reported that the local authorities have issued an order to block and seal the baoli, expressing concern that the village's tribal population might secretly collect water from the spring.

On Saturday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah instructed the formation of an inter-ministerial team to visit the village, around 55 km from Rajouri town, to investigate the cause of the deaths, which occurred in three separate incidents over the last six weeks.

The team, led by officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), includes representatives from the Ministries of Health, Agriculture, and other relevant departments.
