The spurious drug spectre is back in Kashmir after a recent CNN-IBN report suggested that medicine containing chalk and clay were being given to patients for the last two years! Around a dozen life-saving drugs comprising lakhs of tablets meant for supplies to hospitals- including the paediatric GB Pant hospital where over 500 babies died last have turned out to be fake. Dr Muneer Masoodi, the medical superintendent at the GB Pant Hospital when asked whether babies deaths could be due these spurious drugs said, Yes that is quite possible.
Facing public outcry, the J&K government has now handed over the case to the Crime Department though many believe that it could be to protect high-ups including former state Health Minister Sham Lal Sharma. The fake medicines in the hospital should be recalled forthwith and doctors have been asked not to prescribe any such medicine. We want strict punishment against minister Sham Lal, Kashmir doctors' association president Dr Nissar-ul Haq said.
CNN-IBN believes that over 2.7 lakhs tablets of Maximizin have been found to be counterfeit whereas, several thousand Curecef-1000 (Ceftriaxone) contain lethal particulate matter according to the Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital. Reports suggest that government is likely to charge-sheet the purchase panel which passed the drugs without adequate testing.
Over 500 neonates died at the GB Pant Hospital last year leading many to believe that something more sinister than logistic problems and patient overload was in play.
