Monosodium glutamate (MSG), better known as Ajinomoto enhances the flavour of your food. It is usually added to Chinese foods to give it a distinct flavour. The effects of MSG are immediate and not long lasting. Also, it mostly affects people who are allergic to MSG. These people might develop symptoms like headaches, nausea, palpitation, itching, numbness in the back or even swelling in hands and feet,' says Dr Chadha.

A permissible amount of MSG that you can have is 16gm/kg of your body weight when you are not allergic to it. Even your canned soups and pre-packaged foods contain MSG.

You can still be safe

Even if you have Maggi and are worried that it can harm your body, that is, if you notice the above mentioned symptoms, drink adequate water to flush the toxin out of the body. Apart from that, make sure that you don t eat foods that are high in sodium along with your Maggi, like chips, packaged meat or other ready-to-eat food, says Akshat. So, why this hue and cry?

Too much of MSG in the body causes an increase in glutamate which is a neurotransmitter that could make one prone to diseases like Alzheimer s or liver inflammation. However, there are no proven studies to support these facts. The reason even in the developed countries like America there has not been a ban on MSG yet. But what you should worry about more than the MSG is the lead content in Maggi.

So should you stop eating Maggi now?

If you have been eating it once-a-while you can still be rest assured that it hasn't affected your body in a way that smoking or alcohol might have done. But it is always better to move to a healthy more wholesome snack option like a fruit or have more veggies in your diet to eat healthy, says Dr Chadha.Here are other two minute healthy snacks you can opt for instead of Maggi.
