Iron deficiencies are very common among Indians and is mostly treated with iron supplements. However, a new research says that iron tablets are extremely dangerous as they can trigger DNA damage within 10 minutes.
Claire Shovlin, from the Imperial College London, stated that iron in high doses can damage cells is common knowledge, their study found that iron, when taken in dosages that are usually prescribed, can trigger cell damage. (Read: Low haemoglobin count? Try these natural ways to improve)
How was the study conducted?
The researchers analysed the effect of iron on human endothelial cells that line blood vessels in the laboratory. They added a placebo and an iron solution of 10 micro molars (the concentration that is usually seen in the blood after taking an iron pill) to the cell line. They then studied the genes in the cells and found that within ten minutes, the cell treated with iron solution had started DNA repair mechanisms. The study was published in the journal PLOS ONE. The researchers say that physicians should monitor the amount of iron they prescribe in standard treatments because iron can have adverse effects on the human body.
Why does the body need iron?
Iron is an important component of haemoglobin the pigment that is responsible for the red colour of the blood. Lack of iron often interferes with haemoglobin production causing anaemia.
