A 16-year-old girl from Mumbai successfully underwent a cadaverheart transplant surgery on January 3 after the heart of a 20-year-old brain-dead woman from Indore was transported to a private hospital in Thane within only two hours after it reached Indore airport.
The Vikhroli resident was suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart's ability to pump blood is affected. She was immediately operated on by a team of doctors at Fortis Hospital in Mulund, Mumbai. The donor had suffered a head injury following which she was declared brain dead at Choitaram Hospital, Indore. The heart was retrieved by Dr Anvay Mulay, Head of Cardiac Transplant Team at the Mulund private hospital.
The donor heart reached Indore Airport at 7.24am on Sunday and was immediately moved into a commercial flight which took off at 7.41am and landed at Mumbai s Domestic Airport at 8.49am. An ambulance, which was kept on standby for swift transfer of the donor's heart, left the airport at 8.51am and reached Fortis Hospital at 9.07am, following the Green Corridor route which was laid out for the speedy transportation of the organ.
Dr S. Narayani, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, said, 'Yet another interstate transplant has saved a life, this time of a young one, the first patient in the PeadCard category. This transplant wouldn t have been possible without the support of ZTCC Mumbai, Airport & Traffic Authorities at both cities, IndiGo Airlines, Medical Social Workers and Medical Teams at all three hospitals and Hon. The conducting surgeon, Dr Vijay Agarwal, Head of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery, said that the patient is now stable and will be kept under observation for the next 48 to 72 hours.
Meanwhile, the donor's liver was transported to Delhi's Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences where it was transplanted to a 48-year-old man who was suffering from a liver disease known as cryptogenic cirrhosis.
