Neelam Shinde In Coma After Fatal US Accident: What Medical Science Says

In medical terminology, a coma is a fatal health status where the patient suffers from a prolonged state of unconsciousness where the patient remains unresponsive to external stimuli. According to studies published in medical journals such as The Lancet Neurology, coma patients exhibit varying degrees of brain activity depending on the severity of the injury.

  1. Causes of Coma: As per studies, comas can result from serious traumatic incidences such as brain injuries, strokes, oxygen deprivation, or metabolic imbalances.
  2. Survival and Recovery Rates: According to the studies, patients with a GCS score above 8 have a higher chance of recovery compared to those with lower scores.
  3. Risks Associated with Coma: Experts have stated that being in a coma for a long period can lead to severe health complications such as fatal infections, muscle atrophy, and organ failure.

Why Parental Presence Matters in Critical Cases

Neelam Shinde's parents are seeking the government's help to get urgent VISA approval on the basis of a medical emergency, and MEA has stated that they are in talks with the US to get help for Neelam's parents.

"Medical research suggests that a patient's recovery is influenced not just by medical interventions but also by the presence of loved ones. In Neelam's case, her parents' presence will help her overcome the health challenges and come out of the coma successfully," experts were quoted as saying.

  1. Emotional Support and Healing: Studies indicate that coma patients often respond to familiar voices and touches. A study conducted by the Journal of Clinical Neuroscience found that patients in a coma exhibited brainwave activity when they heard their loved ones speak to them.
  2. Medical Decision-Making: In cases of prolonged unconsciousness, families are required to make critical healthcare decisions, including consent for surgeries, life support measures, and rehabilitation options.
  3. Reducing Psychological Trauma: Being physically distant from their critically ill child can be emotionally devastating for parents. Family presence not only provides comfort to the patient but also alleviates the psychological burden on the family members.
  4. Cultural and Legal Considerations: In many cases, hospitals in foreign countries require next of kin to be present for specific procedures, paperwork, or legal formalities. The absence of family members can lead to delays in treatment or decisions regarding long-term care.
