Indian born 56-year-old doctor, Nibedita Mohanty has been charged for running an unlawful drug prescription racket by the Federal Court in Alexandra, Virginia. The doctor's actions costed a patient her life and has also caused grievous harm to her other patients.
Arrested in May 2013, after an investigation by the Stafford County Sheriff's Department, the Virginia State Police as well as the FBI, Mohanty faces a minimum imprisonment of 20 years to life with a 10 million dollar fine, if found guilty of the most severe charges.
The doctor continued to prescribe drugs to a patient even after being cautioned that the lady was addicted to prescription drugs by another doctor. Mohanty continued to prescribe her patient OxyContin, Percocet and Dilaudid even though she was aware of her addiction.
The patient subsequently suffered an overdose and was hospitalised for the same. She was later discharged by Monhanty who, once again, prescribed her painkillers (within two weeks of her first incident) which resulted in her death due to oxydone overdoes.
Employed as the chief of medicine at Stafford Hospital, Virginia from June 2009 to February 2013, Nibedita Mohanty has been charged with 'rapidly and randomly increasing the dosages' of a patient's medicines and charging them a fee of 250 dollars per appointment.
