India is all set to host the first edition of International Conference on Public Health Priorities in the 21st Century: The Endgame for Tobacco from 10th - 12th September, 2013 at Taj Palace Hotel, New Delhi.
The global conference will host over 100 speakers from more than 30 countries, who will come together to discuss a way forward for cohesive policy environment combined with evidence-based community action to promote public health by reducing current tobacco use prevalence and set global and country-wise targets to protect present and future generations from the harms of tobacco use.
Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India,Shri Ghulam Nabi Azadwill attend as Chief Guest at the inaugural ceremony and the keynote address will be delivered by Dr Margaret Chan, Director General, World Health Organization (WHO). Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Smt. Krishna Tirath among other notable attendees.
The conference aims at developing multi sectoral partnerships and taking tobacco control beyond health sector to integrate it with the global development goals and appropriate treatment under trade agreements and treaties. Some of the other key discussions of the conference will revolve around 'Plain Packaging for Tobacco Products', 'Impact and Challenges of Tobacco Use in India' and 'The Tobacco-Free Generation Endgame' among others.
The launch of 'No More Tobacco in 21 Century- NMT 21C', a campaign to engage youth in concerted advocacy to strengthen the existing systems and demand for the Century be free from tobacco, will be another highlight of the conference. The conference will also celebrate the completion of 10 years of the WHO Framework Convention of Tobacco Control (FCTC) and the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) in a session called FCTC & COTPA @ 10. The session will be attended by Dr Haik Nikogosian who is the Head of the Convention Secretariat, WHO FCTC.
'The Conference will identify tobacco as a major threat to public health in the 21st century and will strengthen the foundations for creating a Tobacco-Free generation of the future. This will be a historic step towards a global commitment for ending tobacco threat by eliminating all forms of human consumption of tobacco by the latter half of the century.

With the World Health Assembly (WHA) adopting a target of 30% reduction in tobacco use prevalence by 2025, the global narrative on tobacco control is increasingly exploring the concept of tobacco endgame, which envisions reducing tobacco prevalence and availability to minimal levels.
