New Delhi, Dec 5: The Government of India told Lok Sabha that as per a latest international report, India recorded the highest number of deaths in children below the age of 5 years. The increase in the number of cases was reported to be due to pneumonia and diarrhoea. The reports stated that around 3.18 lakh children below 5 years of age died annually. Health Minister J P Nadda said that India ranks top in the number of child death followed by Nigeria, Pakistan, China, Afghanistan, Sudan and Bangladesh. The major causes of death were attributed to two major water-borne diseases and the burden of death cases was quite high in other Asian countries as well. (Read: The perils of being a child in India)
