According to recent research published in the journal Pain, science is now nearing to discover the cause of the complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). Earlier, it was thought that CRPS is caused due to some abnormal brain activity following an injury. But this study now points the cause towards a problem in the immune system.
CRPS is condition that even scientists have not completely understood. According Andreas Goebel from University of Liverpool in Britain, the findings of this study hint the cause for the syndrome harmful serum autoantibodies. He believes that the findings have raised the possibility of finding a treatment.
'It is quite possible that CRPS is caused by a fault in the immune system. This study seems to pinpoint the cause as autoantibodies, and by examining this area further we can look to developing a cure,' Goebel added.
What is CPRS?
CPRS or the Complex regional pain syndrome is a condition which causes chronic, excessive pain usually in one of the limbs (arms and legs) after the person has suffered an injury or trauma to that limb. Scientists believed that the disease is related to malfunction of the nervous systems where nerve signaling from the brain and spinal cord to different parts of the body may get affected. The syndrome is also associated with mild changes in skin colour and temperature in the affected area.
