IMD Warns Of Above-Normal Heatwave In Telangana Till June; Health Authorities Say, 'Worst Is Yet To Come'

Health authorities have warned the residents of Telangana to brace themselves for a heatwave worse than 2024. In 2024 itself, at least 10 people lost their lives due to extreme weather conditions. The state authorities are now warning that the worst may still be ahead. 2025 may bring more intense and prolonged heatwaves. In order to avert another public health crisis, the Telangana government has rolled out a comprehensive Heat Action Plan. It plans to protect its 35 millions residents among whom over 16 million live in high risk zones.

As per reports, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast of above-normal heatwave days in Telangana from April to June which they say might exacerbating public health concerns.

What Does The Telangana Heat Action Plan, 2025 Specify?

According to the Telangana Heat Action Plan (HAP) 2025, extreme heat and heatwave is no longer considered an isolated meteorological event but has now becomes a recurring and escalating threat to public health. According to data from the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TGDPS), districts like Nalgonda had experienced up to 81 heatwave days during summers in 2024 the highest in over a decade while others like Suryapet recorded 54 days.

IMD Orange Alert To 18 Districts In Telangana

On April 29, the health department issued an advisory following a forecast from the IMD Hyderabad office, which predicts dry weather for the next two days. An orange alert, indicating temperatures between 41 C and 44 C, has been issued for the next four days across 18 districts, including Adilabad, Jagtial, Gadwal, Kamareddy, Karimnagar, Asifabad, Mahabubnagar, Mancherial, Medak, Nagarkurnool, Narayanpet, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Peddapalli, Siricilla, Sangareddy, Vikarabad, and Wanaparthy.

As per the advisory dated April 29, 2025, Dr. B. Ravinder Nayak, Director of Public Health & Family Welfare, emphasized the Telangana government's readiness and urged people to remain cautious:

He said in a statement to the media, "As a part of precautionary measures, the Government has made elaborate arrangements by providing the special beds, I.V. fluids, essential medicines at all the public health facilities and ORS sachets are made available with ANMs / ASHAs / Anganwadi workers to meet any exigencies."
