IMD Issues Red Alert For Maharashtra: Mumbai Braces For Torrential Rains, Flood-Prone Zones On High Risk
IMD has issued a red alert for Maharashtra as Mumbai braces for heavy rains and possible flooding. Know high-risk flood zones, safety tips, and updates on the monsoon impact.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has further heightened the situation by giving a red alert to Mumbai, Raigad and a number of coastal and ghat areas of the state of Maharashtra owing to extremely excessive rainfall. Adjoining zones such as Thane, Palghar, Ratnagiri and Satara also have red-through-orange alert zones put out. Wind speed is likely to be 55-65 km/h together with the downpour.
Mumbai Rains Updates: IMD Issues High Alert
A mind-bending 500 mm of rainfall broke over the span of 84 hours in Mumbai. The city registered about 409 mm in 1.5 days alone, forcing the evacuation of some areas near the Mithi River and the disruption of airlines and transport.
Impact on the city
Waterlogging and traffic chaos: Due to heavy waterlogging in most parts of Mumbai, its roads are clogged with heavy traffic jams, one of the effects of the flooding disaster created in urban areas of the city.
Educational & Office Closures: The BMC announced a holiday in schools and colleges; government and semi-government offices are closed, and the private offices were advised to consider the option of working at home.
Flight Disturbances: Water has wetted flights to land at the airport, and poor visibility has resulted in the diversion of several flights or their cancellation.
Uncertainty in the Face of Peril: In spite of the adverse conditions, Indian Railways maintained that local trains were working with delays. The slogan: "Will not stop, will not pause." Waterlogged tracks are, however, continuing to affect the speed of the services and safety.
Power Cut: To contain the risks, the supply of power has been proactively disconnected to over 250,000 consumers in the metropolitan area. There are n numbers of substations tampered with and transformers destroyed, leaving thousands of households without power.
Mumbai Floods: Casualties and Evacuations
In Bhandup, one person died of electrocution. In Maharashtra, there were seven more death cases because of weather-related incidents.
About 400 villagers in the area of the Mithi River had to be moved around as the water levels increased up to dangerous levels.
There are still local tragedies, such as landslide vulnerabilities in places such as Vikhroli.
How To Stay Safe In Mumbai Rains?
The authorities also request residents not to engage in unnecessary travelling, stay at home, and be watchful. Planning of airport routes particularly stands out with the need to take cautions as highlighted by transport advisories. Disaster and emergency response units go on high alert.
