The World Health Day was celebrated on 7th April all across the world. This year's theme was Food safety.
The Indian Medical association, Chandigarh celebrated it by creating awareness among public. The dignitaries present were Dr Sandeep Dhavan, president IMA, Chandigarh, Prof Atul Sachdev, director principal, Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and Sonia Gandhi, a dietician. The meet was also attended by hoteliers, dieticians and a large number of doctors. (Read: Is your restaurant serving you clean food ?)
As reported by the Times of India, Dr Dhavan said that we need to understand the pressing issue of food safety and make it an unrelenting concern, as individuals, policy makers, farmers, manufacturers or retailers. Prof Atul Sachdev, who was also the chief guest, emphasised the need to promote awareness among people about practising safe steps in food purchasing food handling, cooking, and storage which can prevent food-borne illnesses. Ms Gandhi discussed the bad practises that plague the food market right from farming till the food reaches our plate.
Here are a few tips for you to ensure that the food that you serve at home is safe:
1. Store your grains and pulses the right way
2. Store and clean your meat and eggs the right way
3. Ensure your dairy products are refrigerated
4. Do not eat unwashed fruits
5. Cleaning and sort your vegetables before you cook.
