It's been raining heavily since morning in Mumbai and Pune and their suburbs. Like every year Mumbai has almost come to a standstill with water logging in various pockets across the city and the suburbs. The traffic is slow moving and local trains are running way behind the schedule.

Amidst all this WhatsApp forward is doing rounds about a high alert in Mumbai and Pune. I received this particular forward which alerts citizens of Pune. It says that the water discharge from the Khadakwasla dam has been raised t0 31400 cusecs and the amount of water might increase. It also warns citizens to be alert and be prepared for emergency situations.

The forward also lists a contact number of the disaster management cell. The emergency contact number for Pune is 020-25506800/1/2/3/4.

WhatsApp forward

On calling up this emergency number to find out if this message is true, I was told that they would be releasing 20,000 Cusec of water from the Khadakwasla Dam at 2.00pm today and not 31400 Cusec as mentioned in this particular forward. The above message is from 3rd August and not valid for today. They did release 31400 Cusec water day before yesterday, and there was a little bit of water logging in the city.

I was also told that even though it will continue to rain throughout the people need not panic about water levels. 20,000 Cusec water will not enter homes or not cause flooding.

The situation in Mumbai is somewhat similar. There's waterlogging in some areas. The Mumbai Police Twitter handle is continuously tweeting about the traffic situation. You can also contact BMC helpline number 1916 and Traffic helpline number 8454999999 for any assistance. Yuva Sena President, Aditya Thackeray tweeted about these helplines.

However, one should not take this lightly and be prepared for any situation that might come their way. It's best to stay safe. Save all emergency contact numbers on your cell phones. Charge your mobile phones. Stay indoors and stay safe.
