Most of us are making healthy food choices, ensuring we spend time in a gym or exercise every day without fail but still when we do a blood test, it turns out that we are either prediabetic (borderline diabetes) or suffer from diabetes. So where exactly are we going wrong? Why is there a such a big rise in the number of diabetics in the country? Is it our genetics? Why is diabetes still on the rise in Indians?
According to Dr Pradeep Gadge, our genetics is the same. For any disease to happen, it is all about interaction between three things -- Agent, Host and Environment. Over the years, the agent has remained the same (virus, bacteria, etc), the host (humans) is also the same. The only thing that has changed is the environment. Be it a sedentary lifestyle, stress and depression, lack of sleep, easy availability of packaged food and less socialization, there has been a drastic change in the environment we are living in. Most people say that I go for regular morning walks, exercise every day and I am health conscious, but I am still diagnosed with diabetes. Well, you might be exercising, which is just one of the many interrelated aspects of lifestyle. For example, you exercise every day for an hour but you sleep inadequately and are always on social media, which ultimately outweighs the benefits of exercising. So if you are metabolically active but are stressed and your junk food consumption is high, then high metabolism cannot help you to nullify the negative effects caused due to junk food and stress. Hence, leading a healthy lifestyle is a broad term that involves everything from sleep and diet to exercise and staying happy.
