H.Y. Meti, the senior leader of the Indian National Congress, former excise minister of Karnataka, died on Tuesday, 4 November 2025 in Bengaluru.His demise brings to an end a long and successful political career in the state, particularly in the Bagalkote district.Even he was 79 years old and he had health complications and even respiratory problems.Meti, also referred to as Hullappa Yamanappa Meti, was the Bagalkote assembly constituency Congress MLA, but previously had served several terms representing the constituency and had been a member of the Janata Parivar, before switching to Congress.He was appointed in June 2016 in the Karnataka Cabinet as excise minister under Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.He also became a chairman of the Bagalkote Urban Development Authority in January 2024.

Life And Career of H. Y. Meti

Hullappa Yamanappa Meti also called H. Y. Meti was an experienced politician and a long term member of the Indian National Congress Party in Bagalkote district, Karnataka. Meti was born in 1940 in the Bilagi taluk of Karnataka and devoted his life to serving the people and developing the region in the last forty years of his life.

He started his political journey with the Janata Parivar which was based on the socialist ideology. He later joined Indian national congress where he became one of the leaders of the Kuruba community in North Karnataka. Meti also contributed as the Karnataka legislative assemblyin Bagalkote and Gueledgud constituencies.

Meti first joined the Assembly in 1989, and he was re-elected in 1994, 2004 and 2013, which indicates his lasting popularity. The work he was doing was aimed at rural development, irrigation schemes, and improvement of infrastructure in Bagalkote district.

The peak of his political career came in June 2016 when Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, inducted him as the Excise Minister of Karnataka.Nevertheless, his ministry did not last long- in December 2016, his minister, Meti stepped down after a video of his was leaked. He still remained active in local politics despite the setback and was later cleared by the CID because of a lack of evidence.In 2024, he was the Chairman of Bagalkote Urban Development Authority where he still provided input in civic development.Meti died on November 4, 2025 in Bengaluru, following a short illness.

Overall, His demise spelt doom to the Congress party in North Karnataka. H. Y. Meti is remembered as a simple but dedicated individual in the development of the region and as an individual whose life served as the legacy of a very committed and devoted public servant.
