Ask a woman what she wants in her 'perfect man', and she is most likely to include the words, 'must have a good sense of humour', in her list. While most women say that having the genetic ability to make them laugh is an extremely important quality in a man, a research has found that women are actually hard wired to find a sense of humour attractive.
A study found that a woman's brain showed more activity in the reward related area of the brain, when compared to men. It proved that women had evolved to appreciate humour while men had evolved to be more humorous.
According to this view, women use a man's ability to make them laugh as a way to judge his genetic fitness as a suitable partner and potential father.
The study was performed at the Stanford University of Medicine, where they showed clips to 22 women and men aged between six and thirteen. They were first shown clips that were funny, with people falling over, and animals performing tricks etc. And another set of neutral videos.
On performing an MRI, it was found that women's brains showed greater activity in the mid brain and amygdala. This indicated that women experienced stronger mirth and positive feelings. According to researchers, since they have found that this differentiation occurs in the brains at a young age, the brain is wired to accept humour as signs of a potential mate.
The scientists also stated that since this was a pre-existing preference, it was a preference that was evolved rather than leant from the environment.
