The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is given to girls between 11-14 years of age and is part of the immunisation schedule that paediatricians give parents. The HPV vaccine is usually given to girls before they become sexually active to lower the risk of getting HPV-related cancers. However, not many are aware that HPV can also lead to genital infections and increase the risk of cancers in men. YES! HPV vaccine -- Why should boys get vaccinated?
According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), all preteens need HPV vaccination so they can be protected from HPV infections that cause cancer. The prevalence of HPV infection in men is 40-50% and the only preventative way to lower this risk is to get vaccinated. In India, around 75% of all sexually active adults are likely to be infected with at least one HPV type. The lifetime risk for genital HPV is 50-80% and genital warts is approximately 5%. Also, the HPV vaccine for boys before they are sexually active can reduce burden of HPV infection.
Is HPV vaccine available in India?
Yes, HPV vaccine is easily available in India. However, In India, there is not much awareness about HPV vaccination in boys. Not many gynaecologists and paediatricians recommended the parents to get HPV vaccine for boys. You can easily get the vaccine at any chemist shops or at doctor's clinic.
HPV vaccine -- When should I get it done?
Every kid n the age group of 11-15 years must take the vaccine to prevent the risk of HPV-related infections and cancer. As per the recommended guidelines, the vaccine is not advised in men beyond 26 years of age or for those who are already sexually active. How to take the vaccine?
You need to take 2 shots of the vaccination. One is usually prescribed when the boy is 11 - 14 years and hits puberty but before being sexually active. The other shot of HPV vaccine is recommended after six months after the first shot.
Who should NOT take the vaccine?
Everyone should take the vaccine. However, if you suffer from any infections or are unwell with fever or other health problems, it is wise to postpone getting the vaccination till the infection or symptoms subside. Also, remember all vaccinations should be taken after consultation with a paediatrician or family physician (or general physician).
