In yet another tragic incident, a life was lost to excessive work pressure and stress from the workplace. 42-year-old, Tarun Saxena, the manager who was working for a finance company has ended his life at his residence in Uttar Pradesh's Jhansi after he couldn't take work pressure any longer. Tarun, who had worked for Bajaj Finance for around eight years, committed suicide earlier this week sparking a fresh debate on how excessive workload is taking a toll on young lives in the country.
Tarun was known for his exceptional work ethic and commitment to meeting deadlines. However, his dedication to his job came at a terrible cost. For seven consecutive days, he went without sleep, pushing himself to the limit to meet the demands of his role. He left behind a suicide note addressed to his wife. In the note, Saxena revealed that he had been under immense stress due to pressure from his bosses, who were allegedly pushing him to either meet his targets or call it quits.
Tarun Saxena is survived by his parents, wife Megha, and children Yatharth and Pihu. On that fateful morning, he was found hanging by the house help inside his bedroom. He had locked his wife and two children in a different room before taking his life.
But what forced him to take this extreme step?
Speaking to the media, Saxena's close family friend said, "Tarun Saxena was my elder cousin. He worked as an area manager at Bajaj Finance. The company had been pressuring him to bring in more collections from the market. When he failed to meet the targets, his salary was deducted. As we learnt earlier this morning around 6:00 am, Vaibhav Saxena and Prabhakar Mishra, who are based in Bhopal, held a conference with him and instigated him, following which he died by suicide."
In his suicide note, 42-year-old Saxena wrote: "I am very tense about the future. I have lost my ability to think. I am going . I have not slept for 45 days. I have hardly eaten. I am under a lot of stress. Senior managers are pressuring me to meet targets at any cost or quit,"
Tarun, who has two children, paid their school fees for the entire year before taking the extreme step. "You all take care of Megha, Yatharth and Pihu. Mummy, Papa, I have never asked for anything, but am doing so now. Please get the second floor built so that my family can stay comfortably," the suicide note reads.
Saxena's five-page suicide note also urged his children to study hard and take care of their mother. He also instructed his relatives to help his family in receiving the insurance money.
He also revealed the reason behind taking this hard step - Saxena named his seniors and wrote: "They are responsible for my decision." He additionally requested that his family file a police complaint against those he had mentioned.
To understand the link between sleep deprivation, anxiety, depression and mental health (the reasons behind committing suicide), TheHealthSite.com spoke to Dr Pratibha Mishra, Apollo Hospitals. According to Dr Mishra, "Sleep is a vital aspect of our lives, and chronic sleep deprivation can have severe consequences on our physical and mental health. When we don't get enough sleep, our bodies are unable to repair and rejuvenate themselves, leading to a range of problems."
She further added, "The incident has prompted discussions about the importance of work-life balance and the need for organizations to prioritize employee well-being. While it is essential for employees to be productive and meet deadlines, it is equally important to ensure that they have adequate time for rest and recovery."
