According to recent news, China is witnessing an outbreak of the human metapneumovirus (HMPV). What is HMPV?Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that can cause infections in the upper and lower respiratory tract. It was first discovered in 2001 and is part of the Paramyxoviridae family, which also includes viruses like the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Multiple reports point out that this disease could turn into another upcoming epidemic. According to the recent videos circulating on social media, the hospitals in China are are showing signs of being 'overwhelmed' due to the outbreak. There has been several claims of overcrowded hospitals, crematories, an alleged rapid spread of multiple viruses pertaining to influenza A, HMPV, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and COVID-19.

The question for India is that whether or not we should be concerned about a potential spread of HMPV. Recently, the Indian Health Agency issued a statement to the media, take a look at what they said.

"No Cause For Alarm Over HMPV," Says Indian Health Agency

In a statement to the media, the Indian Health Agency said that there is no cause for alarm over the current situation in China. As per statement from a top official of the country's repository of technical knowledge on medical issues, "There is not need to panic over the spread of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China." However the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) official has highlighted the need for precaution for Indians especially with regards to all respiratory infections. He said to the media, ""... Otherwise, there is nothing to be alarmed about the present situation,"

There is no specific antiviral treatment for HMPV, so prevention is key to controlling its spread, doctors have said.

He also issued a statement wherein he says, "There has been news doing the rounds about a Metapneumovirus outbreak in China. Let me be very clear on that count. Metapneumovirus is like any other respiratory virus which causes common cold, and in the very old and the very young it could cause flu-like symptoms."

"We have analysed data of the respiratory outbreaks within the country. There is no substantial increase in December 2024 data and no cases which have been reported in large numbers from any of our institutions," he added.
