Who doesn't want Goddess Lakshmi to stay in their house forever? But what makes her stay? Cleanliness? At least that's what the new Swachh Bharat Abhiyan advertisement claims. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan began with a bang with Prime Minister Narendra Modi launching it across the country in 2014 on Mahatma Gandhi's 145th birth anniversary. The Abhiyan is aimed at making India spick and span by cleaning up places, building toilets and ending open defecation, creating awareness about cleanliness and waste management.
The new ad is called #DontLetHerGo and features Kangana Ranaut as Goddess Lakshmi and cleverly shows her walking out the moment someone litters the space around them. Cleanliness is next to godliness is something that everyone is taught but we fail to follow it. The message is clear--keep your surrounding clean and Goddess Lakshmi, a symbol of wealth will stay with you forever. The ad also features Amitabh Bachchan, Ravi Kishen and Isha Koppikar.
India for long has been troubled by unclean public places. Improper management of solid waste, no treatment of sewage before disposing of it in the sea, lack of awareness of cleanliness and open defecation are a few of the biggest problems the country faces right now. Open defecation is one of the biggest threats to public health in India. It increases the chances of groundwater contamination and spreads diseases easily. According to reports, over 70 percent people in the rural areas and 13 percent people in urban areas defecate in the open. The PM through Swacch Bharat Abhiyan promised to build 100 million toilets across the country.
To support the PM, many celebs did take the initiative and tried to clean the surroundings around them. People were inspired by this and many pledged their support to this initiative. However, with time and like other government policies, the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan lost its fizz like an old soda bottle. Let's hope this ad reminds everyone of their pledges and creates the much-needed awareness about cleanliness.
