While Udta Punjab's trailer has been released worldwide today, the movie highlights the issue of drug abuse in Punjab where Shahid Kapoor plays the role of a rockstar who has a substance abuse (cocaine) problem. While the movie s trailer begins with the fact that 70% of the youth, who are mostly men, are hooked on to drugs, the harsh reality is that it is as high as 73.5%.
In fact, more and more youngsters in the once prosperous state are now succumbing to the habit of taking illegal drugs mainly because of a multi-million nexus operating right under the watch of the Border Security Force, the Narcotics Control Bureau and other government bodies. These shocking details were revealed in a documentary known as Glut The Untold Story of Punjab .
This documentary is narrated by Rahul Bose and shows the grim reality of life in Punjab where the streets are infested with peddlers who sell drugs to youngsters in public places. In fact, the documentary also discloses how Rs 2,000 crore worth of drugs and 350 packets of heroin make their way into India every single day from Pakistan. Other than just drugs, Punjab also has the highest consumption of alcohol in India and one of the highest consumers of alcohol in the world.
The documentary is only 32 minutes long and shows how drug dealers are called carriers . In fact, shockingly, these drug carriers carry sim cards from Pakistan while smuggling the drugs into India.
