World Hepatitis Day: Know The Type And The Symptoms
The world is celebrating World Hepatitis Day today, i.e, July 28, 2025, which marks the 15th anniversary of World Hepatitis Day.
World Hepatitis Day is observed through Resolution WHA63.18 at the 63rd World Health Assembly in 2010, and July 28 was chosen to honour Dr. Baruch Blumberg's birthday, the scientist who discovered the hepatitis B virus. The aim behind the celebration of World Hepatitis Day was to unify regional hepatitis awareness campaigns under one
single global sphere.
World Hepatitis Day: Hepatitis Types And Symptoms
The year's theme for World Hepatitis Day 2025 is "Hepatitis: Let's Break It Down", which pushes the need to urge for immediate action and measures that can work to help eliminate the economic, societal and even structural barriers that include stigma that obstructs the eradication and elimination of hepatitis and prevention of liver cancer.
As per the World Health Organisation, "World Hepatitis Day is observed each year on 28 July to raise awareness of viral hepatitis, an inflammation of the liver that causes severe liver disease and liver cancer"
This year's theme for the hepatitis Day calls for the need to Break It Down, which is to bring action that can work to dismantle the barriers, be it financial, social or even structural challenges, that even include stigma that stand in the way of hepatitis elimination and liver cancer prevention.
Hepatitis A, B, C, D and E. What's the difference in disease, symptoms and treatment?
The lack of knowledge can often cause a delay in the right treatment and diagnosis. Let us get a clearer picture of each type of hepatitis.
Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A is known to primarily spread through contaminated food or water. This is the virus that is prevalent in India these days. It often causes a short-term illness with full recovery. Hepatitis A symptoms can vary from mild to severe, and the symptoms often include flu-like symptoms, like jaundice, and other gastrointestinal issues.
Another Type of Hepatitis is Hepatitis B, which is known to be transmitted through contact with the infected bodily fluids. This is known to lead to both acute and chronic infections, and is even known to cause serious liver damage. The symptoms of hepatitis B can vary, with many experiencing almost no symptoms at all, which can be the case when the infection is latent, but later, when the symptoms may appear, they may include fever, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and jaundice.

Hepatitis C is one of the most serious conditions that is known to spread mainly through blood-to-blood contact, which often leads to a serious chronic infection and is known to potentially cause liver cirrhosis or cancer. The symptoms of Hepatitis C can often range from none at all to severe liver damage. Many of the people who have reported acute hepatitis C have experienced no symptoms, while many of the patients have developed flu-like symptoms or jaundice. People have experienced grave symptoms at the mature stage.
Hepatitis D
This type of hepatitis is known to occur only in patients who are already infected with hepatitis B. This dual hepatitis condition can worsen the severity of HBV infection. The symptoms of Hepatitis D can be more severe in individuals who are already infected with Hepatitis B, and that can include fatigue, loss of appetite, lethargy, vomiting, dark urine, loose stools, jaundice, having discoloured eyes or pale stool. Such symptoms are noted to be of the hepatitis D condition. The symptoms can take weeks to show up.
Hepatitis E
The last type of hepatitis is hepatitis E, which is very similar to hepatitis A. Many times this type of hepatitis is contracted through contaminated food or water, and usually goes on its own with little medical help. The symptoms of Hepatitis E can be similar to those of most of the other types that are known, which can include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and even Jaundice.
Which Hepatitis Is The Most Dangerous
However, every type of hepatitis can be serious if taken with leniency, but hepatitis C is more often than not considered to be the most dangerous because it has the potential to cause chronic liver disease, cirrhosis and even liver cancer.
Hepatitis B, too, at a time, can also lead to chronic infection and complications, but hepatitis C is most likely to become chronic. Hepatitis A is typically an acute, short-term infection and rarely becomes chronic.
As per the World Health Organisation, Chronic hepatitis B and C are silently causing liver damage and even. Cancer, despite being preventable, has a cure, and in the case of hepatitis C, it is even curable. "The theme for this year emphasises the need to simplify, scale up, and integrate hepatitis services vaccination, safe injection practices, harm reduction and especially testing and treatment into national health systems."
The campaign has been pushed forward as a reminder that one must be extremely vigilant and act in the moment to expand access, integrate care and end the hepatitis infection as a public health problem by 2030, as briefed by the World Health Organisation.
