Hepatitis A Cases In Ernakulum: 8 Deaths And More Than 560 Cases Reported In 2024
Ernakulum, Kerala records a spike in Hepatitis A cases along with jaundice and leptospirosis. Officials say water contamination may be the cause.
Recent reports point out that Ernakulum has recorded eight death cases from Hepattits A and more than 560 confirmed cases alone in 2024. The cases have come into light since January leading up to November this year. According to official reports, the areas that recorded the spike in cases are: Sreemoolanagaram, Malayattoor, Payipra, Kizhakkambalam, Mattancherry, Nellikuzhi, Kothamangalam, Nedumbassery, Kalamassery, Vengoor, and Avoli.
Officials have also reported the possible reason behind the spike in both Hepatitis A and jaundice cases, contaminated water. The places that recorded cases also reported water contamination, says reports.

Symptoms Of Hepatitis
Symptoms include fatigue, loss of appetite, stomach pain, nausea, and jaundice (yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, light-colored bowel movements). Most people feel sick for several weeks, but usually recover completely.
Transmission
Hepatitis A is spread through close person-to-person contact or by consuming contaminated food or water. It can also be spread by a fly carrying the virus on its feet or mouth parts.
