Hi! Believe it or not but my name is Upneet. U-P-N-E-E-T. For 31 long years, I have struggled with my name because I strongly dislike it. Why? Not many of you will be able to understand the *pain* of having an unusual name no one has heard of before. What's in a name? Everything! Yes, it's a constant struggle, one that I will have to bear with for the rest of my life. Think I'm being melodramatic? Hear me out.
1) No one gets my name correctly when they hear it for the first time. Most appear confused, some just nod in amusement and some pretend to be impressed by it. Do you know how exhausting it is to spell out and enunciate your name EVERY SINGLE TIME?
2) Upneet is difficult to remember. Upneet is easy to misspell. I have been called Puneet, Upmeet and Uneet thus far.
3) Having a gender neutral name is NOT cool. On phone calls, in emails and letters, I have been referred to as Mr Upneet and Sir. My 'unisex' name has got me into a lot of trouble. I was once put into the boy's swimming batch in school because some genius thought mine was a boy's name. When I had applied for a job at my present workplace, my boss and colleagues assumed I was a boy after reading my name on my resume.

4) Everybody and I mean EVERYBODY, asks me the meaning of my name. I don't have the slightest clue what my name means. If you do, please let me know.
5) EVERYBODY asks me why I was named Upneet. The story behind my name. Unfortunately, there is no interesting story. It's just some random name my parents heard somewhere and then they decided to call me that for the rest of my life!!
6) I'm jealous of my friends who have common, usual, sensible albeit boring names. Life is so much simpler for you, Priti, Priyanka, Neha and Deepa.
7) The unbridled joy when someone says your name correctly. SO.MUCH.JOY.
