We all love to hit the snooze button and catch some more sleep before finally waking up, but if a recent study is to be believed, then you are putting your life at risk by sleeping more than the required time. For a healthy adult, bed time is about 7-8 hours and anything more than that is a strict no-no, according to this new research. The study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, found that your abnormal sleeping patterns can be a marker of elevated cardiovascular risk.
For the research, the team looked at data from 74 different studies that involved more than 3 million people to conclude that people who sleep for more than 10 hours were 30 per cent more likely to die a premature death than those who slept for 8 hours. Adding more to it, the researchers also found that staying in the bed for more than 10 hours was linked to 56 per cent more chances a death from stroke and 49 per cent risk of cardiovascular disease.
Poor sleep quality was also associated with 44 per cent increase in coronary heart diseases. "Abnormal sleep is a marker of elevated cardiovascular risk and greater consideration should be given in exploring both duration and sleep quality during patient consultations," said lead researcher Dr Chun Shing Kwok, of Keele University's Institute for Science and Technology in Medicine.
However, the study, that involved researchers from the universities of Leeds, Manchester and East Anglia, was limited as the duration of sleep was self-reported and the mental or physical conditions of the respondents may have had an impact on their extreme sleeping patterns.
