Nimisha Mane, aged 19 and Shivani Rawat, aged 18 after a deadly accident in Mumbai, died due to head injuries on March 31.
Nandkumar Mane, Nimisha's father despite his grief on losing his teenage daughter decided to donate his daughter's organs. He met the Nanavati Hospital counsellor and took the decision.
The parents donated Nimisha's kidneys, liver and skin from the back and thighs.
Organ donations from brain dead cadavers are a great way to help someone in the real need for these organs. However, due to cultural and religious reasons, we do not see much of it happening in India. Only 500 lucky people out of 20000 get liver transplants in India.
The Zonal Transplant Co-ordination committee is a non-profit organization which helps with the distribution of organs from cadavers in Maharashtra. Around 1900 patients are registered, seeking kidney transplants, 60 for liver transplants.
Creating awareness among people about organ donation will go a long way in saving thousands of lives.
