In order for asthma treatment to be effective, patients need to increase communication with their physicians, said researchers. Also Read - Health advocates appreciate excise duty on tobacco products

‘When patients do not understand their condition or treatment plan, they may not follow life-saving guidelines, putting them at increased risk for asthma attacks,’ said allergist and article author Stanley Fineman, past president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI).

Fineman noted that only eight to 13 percent of asthma sufferers continue to refill inhaled corticosteroid prescriptions after one year.

Taken early and as directed, these inhalers can improve asthma control, normalise lung function and even prevent irreversible injury to airways, said the study published in the journal titled Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.

The study cited several young adults feeling uncomfortable taking their medication in public settings.

Several of them do not manage their condition as advised, which can lead to increased asthma attacks and emergency room visits.

‘Allergists need to communicate the importance of continuing medication, and patients should express any concerns they might have, such as taking medication in public, since there are often solutions,’ said allergist Alan Baptist, an ACAAI member and senior study author.

According to the study, many of young asthma sufferers said they stopped using prescribed medication when symptoms subsided. (Read: Home remedy for cough and asthma mint leaves or pudina)

Although symptoms can become better with time, asthma is a chronic illness. Unless directed by a physician, asthma patients should never change or discontinue preventive medications.

Asthma is a serious disease and discontinuing treatment can be dangerous. ‘Sufferers need to be sure they regularly take medication and that all of their concerns are being addressed,’ added Fineman.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates, 235 million people suffer from asthma worldwide.

How to relieve cough and asthma

Tip #1: If you are suffering from a cough, drop one drop of mint extract in warm water and inhale the fumes through the mouth and push out the steam through your nose. This way mint extract passes through your throat and nose relieving both the areas. (Read: Natural remedies for frequent cold and cough)

Tip #2: In the case of asthmatic patients they can inhale the vapours of mint as well. The anti inflammatory properties of mint help reduce swelling in the throat and in the bronchioles, giving the patient some relief. (Read: 10 asthma triggers you should avoid)

Tip #3: Another great remedy is to have some mint tea. Not only will this mixture help you get better faster, it will also boost your immunity. To make mint tea, take a few leaves of mint and tulsi, crush them and add them to a cup of boiling water. Next, take a small piece of ginger and a few pepper corns, crush them and add them to the water as well. Bring the mixture to a boil until the leaves turn brown. Now strain and add a bit of honey to sweeten the brew. Sip on this mixture at least three times a day for severe cases of cold. You can reduce the amount of times you have the tea depending on how severe your symptoms are. Remember not to add too much honey to the brew, it can lead to constipation.

Tip #4: If you suffer from frequent cough and cold, or asthma attacks, simply plant a mint plant outside your window. According to Ayurvedic doctors this will help keep the diseases at bay.
