Aunty mat kaho na!

I was reminded of this famous dialogue from Hum Paanch when I read about Harshaali Malhotra being trolled because she called Katrina Kaif 'Katrina auntie'. Poor Harshaali clearly isn't privy to the unwritten rules of addressing a woman in India. To save you from making a rookie mistake like this, here's the quintessential guide to addressing a woman in India based on her age, looks and dressing style (yes, Indians are cool like that). While most of the world uses names to address people, we, the denizens of a much-sophisticated culture, have leveled-up and have a list of respectful (read baseless and enforced) labels for our men and women. Feel free to pin and share this. Better still, make flashcards and memorise it.

Men

A male goes from being

  • Beta -- Age 0-pre-puberty.
  • Bhai or Bro, because you cool like that -- From puberty to age 25 if clean shaven, otherwise 22.
  • Boss -- From puberty to the time you sprout grey hair. Dyeing your hair will still give you away.
  • Uncle -- anyone with a paunch and receding hairline.

Now the interesting part. Notepad, you, me, NOW!

Women

  • Baby (yes, I cringe too everytime I hear an Uncle say this) -- Age 0-12, or longer if you look younger)
  • Didi -- Age 13-20 *Disclaimer: Except for celebrities who continue to be didi for as long as they like.
  • Bhabhi -- Age 20-35 *Disclaimer: You don't have to be married to be called bhabhi. On another note, if you are 20, you SHOULD be married.
  • Aunty -- Age 35-till you sprout grey hair.
  • Maaji/ Amma -- old women.

I feel this list deserves to be included in the academic curriculum so that kids learn the right way of addressing people and us adults can focus on other things like playing PokemonGo. I understand, a baby calling a didi an aunty is something we cannot go by uncorrected. You did your share by trolling Harshaali. I am doing mine by sharing this list. I love when things balance out. Here's an interview of Harshali Malhotra's mother.
