Union Health minister Harsh Vardhan Tuesday announced generous financial support to upgrade the century-old S.N. Medical College to AIIMS level. He asked the college administration to submit a Rs 200 crore plan to broadbase amenities and open up new super speciality departments so people not only from Agra but from neighbouring districts benefit from the upgraded institution.
The minister went around the wards and interacted with patients. He did not appear happy with the level of maintenance and cleanliness. College principal Ajay Agarwal later told the media that plan to develop seven new super speciality departments is being prepared and will be submitted to the ministry. This was the first time that a health minister from the Centre spent a whole day visiting various government hospitals, the Mansik Arogyashala (mental hospital) and the Jalma Centre for Leprosy here.
Later in the evening, Harsh Vardhan opened the SAARC convention of orthopaedic surgeons, OASAC 14, at Hotel ITC Mughal. The association was formed in 1998 at Kathmandu.
