It has been almost two years since the pandemic entered and upended our lives. However, scientists have not found a cure for the disease, Covid-19 that began in China's Wuhan city in November 2019. As researchers and medical experts continue to unravel the many hidden agendas of the coronavirus, there is still so much that is unknown to the world. With new variants emerging, even symptoms of the disease keep changing. While most people experience mild symptoms when affected by the disease, some can experience symptoms that may linger a lot longer than expected.

Year-long research revealed that about half of the patients hospitalised with Covid-19 in the Chinese city of Wuhan in 2020 experienced health issues including muscular tiredness, shortness of breath, and depression 12 months after being discharged.

Hospitalized Patients May Experience Covid Symptoms Even After A Year

According to the study published in the British medical journal The Lancet, Covid-19 symptoms like fatigue and shortness of breath still trouble many patients a year after their hospitalisation for the coronavirus disease. As per reports, around half of Covid-19 patients had at least one persisting symptom. "With no proven treatments or even rehabilitation guidance, long Covid affects people's ability to resume normal life and their capacity to work. The study shows that for many patients, full recovery from Covid-19 will take more than 1 year," said the study.

For the study, researchers examined 1300 individuals from Wuhan, China, who were hospitalised with Covid-19 between January and May 2020. After six months, the proportion of coronavirus patients experiencing at least one symptom dropped from 68 per cent to 49 per cent after a year.

Shortness Of Breath And Fatigue Most Common Symptoms

The study found that respiratory pain increased from 26% of participants after six months to 30% after a year. Infected women were also found to be 43% more likely to experience fatigue or persistent muscle weakness, as well as twice as likely to be diagnosed with anxiety or depression than men who contracted Covid.

The study adds to previous research that advised authorities in many countries that they must be prepared to provide long-term care to Covid-19-affected health staff and patients.

What Are The Other Long-Term Effects Of Covid-19?

Although the study has found that lethargy and shortness of breath are the two most common symptoms of Covid-19 infection, there are other symptoms that may affect you after the infection.

  • Chest pain
  • Brain fog
  • Insomnia
