Guillain-Barré Syndrome Outbreak In Pune: 3 Deaths And 130 Cases Confirmed, State On High Alert
Pune, Maharashtra, is witnessing a significant increase in Guillain-Barr syndrome cases, with at least 3 confirmed deaths and the total number of cases rising to 130. This rare syndrome is an autoimmune disorder with also causes immunological nerve complications. Out of the 130 cases, 25 patients are reportedly from Pune Municipal Corporation area, 74 from newly added villages in PMC area, 13 from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation area, 9 from Pune Rural and 9 are from other districts.
According to news reports, 20 patients are currently receiving treatment and are on ventilator. The sudden surge in cases has health officials and Pune city authorities concerned. The state has ramped up their surveillance measures prompting urgent measures like increasing the count of reservation of hospital bed, stepping up public awareness and preventive measures.
Experts have stated that symptoms like Tingling, weakness of hand-grip or foot drop could signal Guillain-Barr Syndrome (GBS). The caseload in Pune has now gone beyond 100. New reports state that the centre has also taken up measures to monitor and tackle the spread. A seven-member team of experts have been deployed in Maharashtra to aid the surge in cases.
